Microbial Land II,
2020
Video, Performance, Poetry
Microbial Land II, combines 3D video animation, live action footage, and poetry to generate an alternate world with a subverted ecological hierarchy model. This piece is inspired partly by the ecological model that current pandemic imagines, which enlarges the role of the particle, falling in line with Donna Haraway’s notion of ‘inner space’ and the ‘realm of the infinitesimal’, which magnifies the micro, using microscope videos of soil bacteria. This bacterial footage was UV mapped onto 3D landscapes and planets that rotate in the virtual world, superimposed with the bacteria and footage of two gender variant people, identifying as transgender and non-binary, whose eyes are covered by neon tape, and their gentiles outlined. Here, they experience an intimate connection while moving around in the landscape, expressing the importance of using other senses to connect and questioning norms and hierarchies regarding prioritized and valued senses, sizes, and beings.
